Stereo wideners can make a mix feel dramatically larger. Guitars spread outward, vocals seem to float beyond the speakers and the stereo image appears impressively expansive.
Yet many widening techniques introduce an unwanted side effect. The mix begins sounding hollow, phasey or strangely thin, especially when played in mono.
The reason is not the extra width itself. It is the psychoacoustic consequences of how that width is created.
Width Often Begins with Small Delays
