Tempo alone does not determine how fast music feels. The human brain judges musical speed using a combination of timing, dynamics, transients and perceptual contrast.

In other words, perceived speed is a psychoacoustic phenomenon.


BPM Measures Time, Not Perception

A metronome measures evenly spaced beats. Your brain does not experience music as isolated beats.

Instead, it continuously interprets rhythmic events, accents, pauses and patterns to construct a sense of movement.

This explains why songs with identical tempos can evoke completely different levels of energy.


Transients Create Rhythmic Precision
