Three hours later, nothing seems right anymore. You keep boosting the top end, adjusting the vocal level and changing EQ settings that sounded perfectly reasonable earlier.

Usually, it has not. Your auditory system has.


Hearing Is Not Constant

Unlike a measurement microphone, the human auditory system is adaptive. Its job is not to measure sound perfectly. Its job is to help you notice meaningful changes in your environment.

When you listen to the same sounds continuously, your hearing gradually becomes less sensitive to them. This process is known as auditory fatigue , or more broadly, neural adaptation .

It is a normal property of human perception, not a flaw in your hearing.

Your ears never stop working. Your brain simply starts treating familiar sounds as less important.
