Why Should You Mix at 80 dB SPL?

One of the most common pieces of mixing advice is to monitor around 80 dB SPL . Some engineers swear by it, while others mix quietly or very loudly depending on the situation.

So is there something magical about 80 dB SPL?

Not exactly. The number itself is less important than the psychoacoustic principle behind it. Monitoring at a consistent reference level helps you make decisions that translate beyond your studio.


Your Hearing Changes with Volume

In our previous article on Equal-Loudness Contours, we learned that the ear does not hear every frequency equally at every listening level, a relationship formally described by the ISO 226 equal-loudness contour standard.

At lower playback volumes, bass and extreme treble become less prominent. At higher playback volumes, the ear's frequency response becomes more balanced.

This means your perception changes every time you adjust the monitor volume. The recording stays the same, but your hearing does not.


Why Consistency Matters More Than the Exact Number

Imagine spending ten minutes mixing quietly, then turning the speakers up because the chorus feels underwhelming. Suddenly the low end becomes fuller, cymbals feel brighter and the entire mix seems more exciting.

It is tempting to start changing EQ or compression based on this new impression.

The problem is that many of those changes compensate for your ears rather than the mix itself.

Using a repeatable monitoring level helps remove this variable, allowing your decisions to remain consistent from one session to the next.

A reference listening level gives your ears a reference point, not your speakers.

Why Around 80 dB SPL?

Many engineers choose a monitoring level somewhere between approximately 75 and 85 dB SPL . Within this range, the ear's frequency response is relatively balanced compared to very quiet listening, per the same equal-loudness relationship.

This makes it easier to judge bass, midrange and treble without constantly compensating for the way human hearing changes with volume.

The exact number depends on room size, speaker distance and personal workflow. What matters most is choosing a sensible reference level and returning to it regularly.


Louder Is Not More Accurate

Listening loudly often makes almost every mix sound impressive. Bass feels deeper. Drums seem more powerful. Wide stereo effects become more dramatic.

Those improvements are often perceptual rather than musical.

If every decision is made at an excessively high level, the finished mix may lack energy when played at everyday listening volumes.


Quieter Listening Has a Purpose Too

Many experienced engineers periodically reduce the monitor level while working.

At low volumes, the most important elements should still remain easy to follow. The vocal should remain intelligible. The groove should still make sense. The musical balance should continue feeling natural.

If a crucial instrument disappears completely when monitoring quietly, it may indicate a balance problem rather than simply a volume problem.


Reference Tracks Become More Reliable

Reference tracks are only useful when they are compared under similar listening conditions.

If your mix is evaluated at one volume while the reference plays much louder or softer, differences in human hearing begin influencing your judgement.

Maintaining a consistent reference level makes those comparisons significantly more meaningful.


Protecting Your Hearing Matters

Another advantage of moderate monitoring levels is reduced listening fatigue.

Extended exposure to high sound pressure levels can temporarily reduce sensitivity, particularly in the upper midrange where human hearing is naturally most sensitive, an exposure relationship covered by WHO safe listening guidance.

As fatigue develops, engineers often compensate by making unnecessary EQ adjustments or increasing playback volume even further.

Music is rarely heard under ideal studio conditions. It is played quietly at home, loudly in cars, through headphones, televisions and portable speakers.

There is nothing magical about exactly 80 dB SPL. The real benefit comes from understanding why a consistent reference level matters.
