How to Prepare Your Multitrack Files Like a Pro Before You Mix

Ask any seasoned producer what separates a smooth mix from a painful one, and very few will start with plugins or technique. They will start with preparation.

A clean, correctly exported set of multitrack files makes every later decision easier; a messy one sabotages the mix before it begins. Tracks that start at different points, sit at different sample rates, or arrive already clipping will fight you at every step, and no amount of mixing skill fully recovers from a bad export.

The Pre-Flight Checklist

Before anything goes into FREQ , every track in your song should pass these five checks.

1. Every Track Starts at the Same Point and Shares the Same Length

This is the single most important rule, and the one beginners break most often.

Export every track from the exact same start point; the beginning of the song; even if a track is silent there. A backing vocal that only appears in the final chorus should still be exported as a full-length file that begins at bar one, with silence up to its entry.

Why: if tracks start at different points, they will not line up when loaded, and your perfectly recorded performance will play back out of time. Exporting everything from the same zero point, at the same length, guarantees the session lines up automatically. This is often called consolidating or bouncing from the start of the timeline.

2. Every Track Shares the Same Sample Rate

All your files must be at one sample rate. Mixing a 44.1 kHz track with a 48 kHz track in the same session causes timing and pitch problems or forces conversion that can degrade quality.

Pick one sample rate for the whole project at the start, and export everything at it. The next section covers how to choose.

3. Every Track Shares the Same Bit Depth

Bit depth controls the resolution and dynamic range of your audio. Export all tracks at the same bit depth.

4. No Clipping, Unless It Is Deliberate

A clipped track has distortion baked permanently into the file. You cannot remove it later.

Leave headroom on every track. Aim for peaks comfortably below 0 dBFS; peaks landing around -6 dBFS are a safe, common target. This gives the mix room to breathe and prevents the harsh, crunchy artefacts of digital clipping.

The exception is intent. If you deliberately drove a drum bus into distortion as a creative choice and you want that sound, keep it; that is a decision, not an accident. The rule is simply this: clipping should only ever be something you chose, never something that happened to you.

5. Clean, Labelled, and Free of Junk

Before export, tidy the session:

Choosing Your Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz

This decision confuses people endlessly, but the rule is simple once you know what your song is for.

The question to ask: will this audio live on its own as music, or will it live with picture?

Use 44.1 kHz for music releases

44.1 kHz is the long-standing standard for music distribution. Choose it when your song is headed for:

Real example: You are releasing an independent single to Spotify and Apple Music. Export and mix the whole project at 44.1 kHz.

Use 48 kHz for anything with video

48 kHz is the standard for film, television, and online video. Choose it when your audio will be paired with picture:

Real example: You are scoring a short film, or producing the music bed for a brand's YouTube ad. Export and mix at 48 kHz, because the audio will be married to video.

The one rule that matters most

Whatever you choose, keep every track in the project at that same rate. Decide at the start based on the destination, and do not mix rates within a single song. When in doubt and the song is music first, 44.1 kHz is the safe default.


Know Your Track Types Before You Assign Depth
